FemSTEM: Intro to Computer Science program is an application-based program that will meet over the course of 3 weekends to introduce middle school girls to the wonderful world of computer science. Throughout the sessions, participants will be learning computer science through a number of different ways, including informational presentations, engaging discussions, interactive games, and of course, through hands-on coding and creating a culminating CS + social-impact project.
What makes this program unique is that it promotes interdisciplinary learning. We want our participants to know that pursuing CS does not mean that they have to drop their other interests – in fact, they can combine their passions with CS to create powerful fields/futures.
Another unique aspect of this program is that it teaches additional technology topics along with CS, such as cybersecurity and online safety. We believe that any tech class should teach this essential subject because students need to know how to stay safe with the tech that they’re using every day.
A very important goal of this program is to teach the girls how to think like programmers and the logic behind CS, as we believe that learning this mindset is essential, and typing the code comes after. Of course, the girls will employ this thinking process through their code.
The location for the program currently being finalized – it will most likely be held at a local middle school, high school, or local library.
